About the JHM Gamma Knife

The Gamma Knife is not a knife at all. It is a device that channels traditional radiation x-ray beams through 201 spherically arranged orbs that at its source precisely targets brain tumors, blood vessel malformations, and other brain abnormalities. Channeling the radiation through the 201 pathways, or orbs, provides the most precise treatment that is also painless and typically completed in the same day.

What contributes to the precision of the Gamma Knife?

  • A frame is fitted to the patient prior to treatment to ensure that the radiation precisely strikes the targeted abnormality
  • High resolution digital imaging is used to program the Gamma Knife treatment at the precise location of the patient's abnormality or tumor
  • Radiation passes through the 201 orbs until converging in a powerful burst on the targeted abnormality or tumor
