The Johns Hopkins Gamma Knife Treatment Team

An integral component of the Gamma Knife treatment experience is the Johns Hopkins team of physicians and care providers. Gamma Knife treatment at Johns Hopkins is unique in the fact that the team is co-lead by a Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon and a radiation oncologist.
At the time of the initial patient consultation, both a neurosurgeon and a radiation oncologist see the patient at the same time. This combined consultation ensures that the patient receives the most appropriate treatment available based upon the unique presentation of the patient's conditions.
Patients with brain abnormalities or tumors have available to them the entire medical treatment resources of the Johns Hopkins medical campus, which has been named ‘ America 's Best Hospital ' for the past 15 consecutive years. Should patients require services outside the gamma knife treatment suite, patients can feel secure that the treatment provided is from a Johns Hopkins physician.

Physician Bios

Daniele Rigamonti, M.D.
Vice Chairman and Professor of Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Gamma Knife Treatment Center. Both a neurosurgeon and a stereotactic radiosurgeon, Dr. Rigamonti's research and clinical interests are vast. Among his treatment specialties include: focuses on vascular diseases that affect the brain and spinal cord, such as cavernomas, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs). Additional clinical interests include benign and metastatic brain tumors, skeletal dysplasia, adult hydrocephalus and benign intracranial hypertension

Lawrence R. Kleinberg M.D.
A radiation oncologist by training, Dr. Kleinberg, along with Dr. Rigamonti, is the Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Gamma Knife Treatment Center . Dr. Kleinberg specializes in the treatment of malignant and benign central nervous system diseases with external beam radiotherapy, brachtherapy, and radiosurgery (Gamma Knife treatment).
In addition to gamma knife treatments of the central nervous system, Dr. Kleinberg also treats esophageal cancer, primarily with combined modality protocols involving concurrent chemotherapy followed by surgical resection. His research interests include:
- Testing new agents in the therapy of Glioblastoma
- Improving fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery for acoustic neuroma
- Radiosurgery for multiple brain metastasis
- Outcome with various techniques of radiosurgery
- Quality of life issues

Alessandro Olivi, M.D.
A professor of neurosurgery and oncology and director of neurosurgical oncology, Dr. Olivi focuses on the surgical treatment of primary and metastatic tumors of the brain and spinal cord. He performs microsurgery on skull-based tumors, such as acoustic neuromas, meningiomas and vascular lesions. Additional clinical interests include cerebrovascular conditions and craniofacial reconstructions.
When not performing surgery, Dr. Olivi is actively involved in designing and running clinical experimental protocols to develop and assess new treatments for patients with brain tumors. He is also leading multidisciplinary initiatives to coordinate the most suitable management of patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent brain tumors.

Ori Shokek, M.D.
Dr. Ori Shokek earned his medical doctorate from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2001. He remained at Johns Hopkins as a resident physician in radiation oncology, specializing in the treatment of pediatric malignancies and of childhood and adult brain tumors. He is currently an instructor of radiation oncology.
Dr. Shokek’s clinical work and research focus on the treatment of childhood cancer and of malignant and benign brain tumors of both adults and children. Among the patients to whom Dr. Shokek provides specialty care are those with:
- Brain metastases
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Arteriovenous malformations (AVM)

Michael Lim, M.D.
Dr. Michael Lim received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He then completed his general surgery internship and neurosurgery residency at Stanford Hospital. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in novel therapies against brain tumors.
As an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Oncology at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Lim’s surgical interest is in the treatment of primary and metastatic brain tumors as well as pituitary and skull base tumors. He utilizes the most advanced techniques in neurosurgery including image guided surgery, microsurgery, minimally invasive techniques, and endoscopic surgery. Dr. Lim also has expertise in radiosurgery for brain tumors, arterial venous malformations, trigeminal neuralgia, and spine lesions.
Dr. Lim’s primary research interests include:
- Immune-based therapies against brain tumors.
- Understanding the mechanisms of immune evasion by primary brain tumors with the goal of translation to novel therapies against glioma.
