About John Hopkins Medicine
Known worldwide for leadership in biomedical education, research and patient care, Johns Hopkins Medicine was established in 1996 to strengthen collaboration between The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and its faculty with the organizations, health professionals and facilities of The Johns Hopkins Health System.
With its origins in the founding of the world-famous Johns Hopkins Hospital more than a century ago, the Health System now comprises three hospitals, as well as other elements of an integrated health care delivery system—from a community physicians group with 15 locations to suburban specialty centers, from long-term care to home care. Johns Hopkins Medicine, though based in Baltimore , Maryland , also has clinical, research and educational facilities in Singapore .
Johns Hopkins is consistently named at the top of national rankings for best hospital and best school of medicine, and its faculty consistently wins the largest share of National Institutes of Health research funds. Results of this research continue to advance efforts to diagnose, treat and prevent many diseases.
This 1,000-bed flagship of Johns Hopkins Medicine opened in 1889 on the East Baltimore site designated by founder Johns Hopkins in his will. Today, The Johns Hopkins Hospital includes such renowned centers as the Brady Urological Institute, the Wilmer Eye Institute, the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center , the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and the Johns Hopkins Heart Institute. Nurses here have achieved the coveted Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence—an internationally recognized "gold standard" for nursing.
